Cloves are the aromatic dried flower buds of an evergreen tree which grows to a height ranging from 10-20m. Cloves are native to Indonesia. In fact, according to FAO, Indonesia produced almost 80% of the world's clove output in 2005 followed at a distance by Madagascar and Tanzania. The name derives from French clou, a nail, as the buds vaguely resemble small irregular nails in shape. Cloves are harvested primarily in Zanzibar, Indonesia and Madagascar; it is also grown in Pakistan, India, and Sri Lanka.
Cloves are used as a spice in cuisine all over the world in either a whole or in a ground form, but as they are extremely strong, they are used sparingly. They also include phytochemical properties and nutrient content, including calcium, iron, magnesium, potassium, zinc, and various vitamins. Cloves are considered to have antiseptic and anti-parasitic properties and act as an aid to digestion. Essential oil is applied topically for relief of tooth ache and mouth pain. Here in Peru, people place whole cloves in their mouth at first sign of a toothache to numb the painful area.
You now have the opportunity to “Think Spice” by creating and sharing a recipe featuring cloves as part of the Think Spice event for April. Think Spice was created by Sunita from Sunita’s World. Here's how you can participate:
Post a recipe highlighting cloves, using either form, whole or ground. Please be sure that the cloves are the star of the dish and not overpowered by other spices.
Share other information about cloves: Is it used in forms other than cooking in your home? Does it bring up particular memories? Do you have any tips or advice about cloves?
Include a link back to this post so that others may be able to participate and for future reference.
Email me (canelaycomino AT gmail DOT com) your entry with the following information on or before April 25th:
- your name,
- the name of your blog,
- the URL of your blog,
- the name of your recipe,
- the URL of your recipe post, and
- a picture of your dish (250 pixels wide)
I look forward to all of your wonderful ideas for cloves. Be creative and have fun!
