I have trouble remembering how to say things in English sometimes. Words or terms that I never used in English are rather difficult to bring to my mind now that I know the Spanish version. This happened a few months ago when I visited the US.
I was sitting in a cute little diner, looking over a delicious breakfast menu, before church one Sunday morning. The waitress came over and I politely asked for coffee, then continued to consider the various breakfast options. My friends advised me that this particular diner has incredible hash browns that were certainly worth ordering. "Hash browns and eggs it is," I decided!
The waitress came back and I confidently stated, "hash brown and 2 egg breakfast!" She asked the difficult question, "And how would you like those cooked?" Ohhh...how do I want those cooked??? "Over easy," I answer, having no idea what that actually means. Then I worry...over easy? Is that what I want? What is over easy? I wanted a fried egg. One side only. Yolk runny. White cooked. Over easy? Is that what over easy is? (Mind you, this was all going on in my mind...then it came out my mouth!)
"Excuse me, how are eggs over easy cooked? What I want is cooked on one side with runny yolk but with the white part cooked." I just proceed to explain the details of what I want to the cook to do with my eggs. No idea that after eating fried eggs for so long in Peru, I had actually learned to like what is known by most as "sunny side up" when here in Peru it is simply a fried egg. Fried the only way it is fried here in Peru. I appreciate being able to say "huevo frito" and knowing just what I will get! No questions.
So here is my delicious one-side-fried-yolk-runny-white-cooked-egg breakfast sandwich.
After toasting a homemade English muffin, I spread Dijon mustard on both sides, wilted a few baby spinach leaves, added a slice of gouda cheese and a famous sunny side up egg. Yum! I love when my breakfasts wind up being a work of art. And just in time for CLICK: The Photo Event featuring...EGGS!

thanks for a lovely entry to CLICK, gretchen. it's great to discover your blog.
Hi! Lovely photos!
As for the language, I understand how you feel. Actually, there is a scientific/psycholinguistic explanation behind it. The phenomenon is called language attrition in linguistics. But I won't bother you with that...
Loved your breakfast! yum!
I always make home made Egg muffins. Yours looks great.
Bee - Thanks so much for hosting CLICK, I too have been enjoying your blog!
Manina - Thanks! How interesting to hear that there is an explanation, I will have to learn more!
Rina - Thanks! I will be making many more breakfast sandwiches like these!
This is so interesting. Growing up in Trinidad, we called what are essentially omelettes "fried eggs" and eggs like this, whether sunnyside up or over easy "sunnyside". It may just have been our family, since we never ever ordered eggs outside, we had our own classifaction. It was sunnyside because the yolk was yellow and whole and sunny :-)
Love the shot! (came from CLICK)
I hate eggs and looking at that sandwich makes we want to re-think my stand on eggs. Yum!
Chenette - it is so interesting that even within the Spanish language there are still many differences on what things are called. I hope to get a chance to look more in depth at your blog.
Lori - I am glad you see the sandwich as appetizing even with your "hate" for eggs!
